The framers of the 1985 amendments to the Federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) envisioned the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as the linchpin--the central and cohesive element--of the laboratory animal care and use program at research, education, and testing organizations. Effective operation of this committee is essential if these organizations are to achieve full regulatory compliance, and, more importantly, retain the public's support for activities involving the use of animal subjects. In 1987, the Scientists Center for Animal Welfare, in cooperation with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, published a compilation of presentations made at five regional workshops on effective operation of IACUCs. In the decade since this compilation was published, nearly all of the 18 consensus recommendations developed by the workshop participants and the Center's Board of Trustees have either been incorporated into the AWA regulations or have been voluntarily adopted by institutions using animals subjects. The Care and Feeding of an IACUC: The Organization and Management of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee superbly illustrates the progress and advances the animal-using communities have made in implementing these and other improvements in their animal care and use programs. The highly qualified contributors provide twelve information-packed chapters and ten appendices that provide IACUC chairs and members with an indispensable reference. This book summarizes information critical to the effective and efficient management and operation of an IACUC, and, as such, should be made available to IACUC members and administrative officials in every institution using laboratory animals.

Maintaining its user-friendly approach, The Care and Feeding of an IACUC: The Organization and Management of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Second Edition is a handy guide for members of the laboratory animal community looking for a concise, descriptive introduction to what an IACUC is all about and how it operates. The book covers training programs and discusses professional certifications for IACUC administrative and animal care staff. It provides pointers to principal investigators, discusses interactions between IACUCs and other compliance panels, and addresses occupational health and safety programs and the role they play in the overall animal care and use program. This new edition of a bestseller contains new information on international regulations regarding animal subject research and the requirements for an ethics panel review. It discusses outside collaborations, interinstitutional memorandums of understanding, and the differences in regulations between countries. The book also includes a new chapter exploring semiannual program reviews, semiannual inspections, and postapproval monitoring. The contributors provide updated information on the protocol submission process, electronic protocol management systems, and records management-including the essential elements of the protocol form and how to complete it. The book also delves deeply into bioethics. It discusses how IACUCs can ensure that each proposal to use animals in research includes an ethical review with a harm-benefit analysis weighing the expected advancements in human and animal health against the potential harm inflicted to the animal. Also included is a chapter on how to survive a regulatory inspection or an accreditation site visit. All interpretations of the regulations have been reviewed by staff at the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), the Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC), and USDA APHIS/Animal Care (AC) for consistency and compliance with the PHS Policy and the USDA Animal Welfare Act Regulations (AWAR).

A respected resource for decades, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals has been updated by a committee of experts, taking into consideration input from the scientific and laboratory animal communities and the public at large. The Guide incorporates new scientific information on common laboratory animals, including aquatic species, and includes extensive references. It is organized around major components of animal use: Key concepts of animal care and use. The Guide sets the framework for the humane care and use of laboratory animals. Animal care and use program. The Guide discusses the concept of a broad Program of Animal Care and Use, including roles and responsibilities of the Institutional Official, Attending Veterinarian and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Animal environment, husbandry, and management. A chapter on this topic is now divided into sections on terrestrial and aquatic animals and provides recommendations for housing and environment, husbandry, behavioral and population management, and more. Veterinary care. The Guide discusses veterinary care and the responsibilities of the Attending Veterinarian. It includes recommendations on animal procurement and transportation, preventive medicine (including animal biosecurity), and clinical care and management. The Guide addresses distress and pain recognition and relief, and issues surrounding euthanasia. Physical plant. The Guide identifies design issues, providing construction guidelines for functional areas; considerations such as drainage, vibration and noise control, and environmental monitoring; and specialized facilities for animal housing and research needs. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals provides a framework for the judgments required in the management of animal facilities. This updated and expanded resource of proven value will be important to scientists and researchers, veterinarians, animal care personnel, facilities managers, institutional administrators, policy makers involved in research issues, and animal welfare advocates.

The Ethics Of Animal Experimentation written by Donna Yarri and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-18 with Religion categories.

The ethical treatment of animals has become an issue of serious moral concern. Many people are challenging long-held assumptions about animals and raising questions about their status and treatment. What is the relationship between humans and animals? Do animals have moral standing? Do we have direct or indirect duties to animals? Does human benefit always outweigh animal suffering? The use of animals for experimentation raises all of these questions in a particularly insistent way. Donna Yarri gives an overview of the current state of the discussion, and presents an argument for significantly restricted animal experimentation. Pointing to the similarities between humans and animals, she argues that the actual differences are differences of degree rather than kind. Animal cognition and animal sentiency together are the basis for the claim that experimental animals do have rights. Examining arguments in the disciplines of ethology, philosophy, science, and theology, Yarri makes a case for placing substantial restrictions on animal experimentation. Grounding her examination in Christian theology, she formulates a more humane approach to animal experimentation. She concludes with a concrete burden-benefit analysis that can serve as the foundation for informed decision-making. The Ethics of Animal Experimentation serves as both a handbook of animal rights theory and a practical guide to navigating the complexities of animal experimentation. As animal experimentation features in an increasing number of scientific endeavors, it is an ethical issue that requires our immediate attention. Yarri's unique contribution forges a path toward an ethical practice of animal experimentation.
